The patriarchal hierarchy, which originated from the patriarchal family and clan system at the end of primitive society, is a kind of legal norms of the family and clan groups gradually established in the process of the formation of the clan state system in ancient China, in order to adjust the blood kinship relationship among people and maintain their ethical and moral order and social hierarchy. The basic principle of the clan system is to establish the first-born son of each clan as the eldest, who resides in a dominant or leading position in the same clan; and to separate the other sons of the common people into small clans, who are in a subordinate or secondary position to the eldest.
