What is the custom of Korean Spring Festival?
First, post Spring Festival couplets.
Koreans also put up Spring Festival couplets to celebrate China New Year, but their Spring Festival couplets were put up in beginning of spring on this day. The most interesting thing is that we celebrate China New Year. Couplets are all red and black, and Korean Spring Festival couplets are written in big white paper. It's black and white on both sides of the door, and we in China always feel strange when we look at it, as if something is wrong. Koreans don't feel uncomfortable and think it's a tradition.
Second, shou sui
Koreans, like us, don't sleep on New Year's Eve and have to "keep watch". The family talked and laughed together, played games and waited until dawn to welcome the New Year. I remember our ballad "Stay up all night on New Year's Eve", and Koreans who are eager to learn it have also learned it.
Third, sacrifice
Zhu Xi said: "Although our ancestors are far away, we should not sacrifice in good faith." Koreans take our words seriously and attach great importance to sacrifice. They believe that during the Spring Festival, the deceased ancestors will come back to spend the festival with their families. Therefore, Korean families will hold sacrificial activities during the Spring Festival to pay homage to their ancestors and pray for blessing. This is the same as ours.
Fourth, New Year greetings and lucky money.
Koreans also "celebrate" the New Year, and the younger generation pays New Year greetings. However, we can pay New Year's greetings almost all the year round. From the first day to the fifteenth day, they only have two days to pay New Year's greetings, that is, New Year's Eve and the first day. During the Spring Festival, elders will also give their children lucky money and put it in envelopes. Children will also be happy to put it away and save it to buy things they like.
5. Eat rice cake soup and wear hanbok.
During the Spring Festival, we will wear new clothes and then go out to visit relatives. Our new clothes can have various styles, but there is no uniform style. Koreans will wear their traditional costume-Hanbok on the day of the old ceremony. At this point, I think Koreans have done a good job. Wearing their traditional clothes on special days is also a symbol of patriotism.
