What does picc catheter mean?

PICC (Peripheral Inserted Catheter) is a surgical method, which uses ultrasonic technology to insert a hose into the patient's upper arm or hand vein, and then enters the superior vena cava or inferior vena cava through the elbow and shoulder, so that it can reach the position close to the heart through a larger blood vessel. The purpose of this catheter is to provide systemic venous access for nutritional support, infusion therapy and long-term continuous intravenous infusion of antibiotics, so as to better treat patients.

Indications and advantages of PICC catheterization

Indications of PICC catheter include patients who need long-term intravenous nutrition support, long-term antibiotic therapy, postoperative infusion therapy and complicated treatment in a small ward environment. Compared with the traditional central venous catheterization, PICC catheterization has the advantages of safety, simplicity, easy operation, less trauma and fewer complications. The probability of complications such as arterial catheter or atrial septal defect is much lower.

Precautions and differences in placing PICC catheter

In the process of PICC catheterization, special attention should be paid to the cleaning of intubation point, the adjustment and positioning of catheter length and position to prevent complications. In addition, unlike central venous catheterization, PICC does not need to be replaced by emergency personnel after catheterization, but only needs to be replaced by treatment personnel regularly. At the same time, compared with PICC, the cost of catheterization is lower, which can improve the treatment effect and reduce the economic pressure of patients.
