Why did feudal society oppress women?
During the period of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Minister Dong Zhongshu put forward the idea of "ousting a hundred schools of thought and respecting Confucianism alone", which made the patriarchal clan system and ethics of Confucianism become the mainstream of society. Among them, paternalism, as the core concept of the family, clearly divided men and women into masters and nobles, and the resulting feudal social laws became a powerful tool to oppress women and maintain male rule.
"Three obedience" is one of the social moral norms that women in feudal society must follow. Women are in a low position from birth, obedience is their survival criterion, and childbirth is their survival significance.
"Parents' orders, matchmakers' words", "marry a chicken with a chicken, marry a dog with a dog" and "the married daughter loves to beat, scold and bully" are the true portrayal of women's views on marriage at that time. After marriage, a woman must take her husband's surname, which seems to be a man's private goods, and some of them are even regarded as funerals, and they have no independent right to be named for life.
According to the feudal system, only sons, especially the eldest son, were eligible to inherit the family business, thus completely depriving female members of their property rights and even controlling the dowry.
Confucian education aims at maintaining male domination, so it "naturally" shuts women out.
Women in feudal society had no right to participate in politics. In order to maintain male rule, the rulers advocate "men dominate outside, women dominate inside" and strictly separate men and women.
It can be seen that women in China in feudal society were at the bottom of society in politics, family, economy, education and other aspects. Their rights and dignity as "human beings" have been completely obliterated by the patriarchal society, and the word "tool" has become the most vivid interpretation and synonym for women.
