The topic of social change and human change has long been included in the vision of western scholars. Since 1962, with the support of Harvard Center for International Affairs, A. Jinker, a social psychologist and sociologist of Harvard University in the United States and his colleagues have implemented a large-scale plan called "Study on Cultural Factors of Economic Development", which has had a great impact on personal modernity, especially on the personal changes of developing countries that are transforming from traditional society to modern society-from traditional people to modern people. 1966, they completed the empirical research in six developing countries, and eight years later, they published the book "From Traditional People to Modern People-Personal Changes in Six Developing Countries in China" (1974), which aroused widespread concern and heated debate in international academic circles.

First, in any society (traditional society, transitional society, modern society) or culture, the psychology and behavior of different kinds of people are determined or influenced by the characteristics of social ecological environment, economic and social forms and social lifestyles to varying degrees. Instrumental psychology and behavior are necessary to adapt to the social ecological environment, so they are more determined and influenced by these factors than non-instrumental psychology and behavior. Universal psychology and behavior are closely related to people's basic physical and mental structure and function, and are not easily changed by external factors such as ecology, economy, society and living conditions. Special psychology and behavior are necessary to adapt to the ecological, economic, social and living conditions of a certain society (such as agricultural society, animal husbandry society, gathering society, fishing and hunting society or industrial and commercial society), so their formation is largely determined or influenced by these factors; The situation of unique psychology and behavior is more complicated, in which instrumental psychology and behavior are more determined and influenced by these factors than their non-instrumental psychology and behavior.

Second, the ecological, economic and social changes in the process of modernization are mainly from a traditional society to an industrial and commercial society. In this process, the original psychology and behavior adapting to the traditional society will change in connotation, weaken in intensity, and continue to maintain to a certain extent, and will not die out.

Third, in order to adapt to the industrial and commercial society, people will gradually form all kinds of new psychology and behavior, that is, modern psychology and behavior, and their intensity will gradually increase. As shown in the figure below:

Fourthly, in social changes, psychology and behavior adapting to traditional society and modern society may present some opposite characteristics, and there may be two trends: (1) cross-trend changes. That is, some traditional psychology and behavior are the main ones to adapt to the traditional society, and some modern psychology and behavior are the main ones to adapt to the modern society; (2) Non-crossing trend. That is, some traditional psychology and behavior are secondary psychology and behavior that adapt to traditional society, while some modern psychology and behavior are secondary psychology and behavior that adapt to modern society.

Fifth, in the process of modernization, the individual differences in the speed and degree of psychological and behavioral changes can be divided into four types: (1) simple traditional type. That is, individual types with traditional psychological and behavioral characteristics. (2) Simple and modern. That is, individual types with modern psychological and behavioral characteristics. (3) Strong mixing type. That is, tradition and modernity are two types of individuals with high psychological and behavioral characteristics. Include strong conflict mixed type and strong non-conflict mixed type. (4) weak mixing type. That is, tradition and modernity are two types of individuals with low psychological and behavioral characteristics.
