Zhang Chonghe (1914 - June 18, 2015), female, born in Shanghai and originally from Hefei, was the great-granddaughter of Zhang Shusheng, a leading general of the Huai Army and governor of Zhili in the Governor's Office of the Two Cantonal Administrations, and the fourth daughter of Zhang Wuling, an educator from Suzhou ("the four sisters of Hefei " in which she was the youngest sister).
After accompanying her husband to the United States in 1949, Zhang Chonghe taught calligraphy and kunqu at more than 20 universities, including Harvard and Yale, for more than 50 years, and quietly cultivated her life for the promotion of traditional Chinese culture. She is known as a Republican lady and "the last talented woman".
In the early morning hours of June 18, 2015, Zhang Chonghe passed away at the age of 102 in the United States.
Extended information:
Zhang Chonghe lived a low-key life of humility and Out of respect, everyone called her "Mr. Zhang". She was the wife of the late HansH.Frankel, a famous professor of East Asian Studies at Yale, and one of the world's last remaining masters of calligraphy, kunqu and poetry. Since Eileen Chang and Bing Xin died, and Soong Mei-ling passed away, the most common title for her is "the last talented woman of the Republic of China".
Because Zhang Zhaohe, the wife of the great writer Shen Congwen, was her sister, her name is often associated with Shen Congwen - today's epitaph on Shen Congwen's grave in Fenghuang, western Hunan Province, is from her handwriting.
She was one of the famous "Four Sisters of the Zhang Family" in Chongqing and Kunming during the Republican era, combining intelligence, beauty and talent, and was a contemporary friend and poet of Chen Yincheng, Jin Yuelin, Hu Shizhi, Zhang Daqian, Shen Yinmo, Zhang Shizhao, Bian Zhilin and other great masters of the generation.
On Zhang Chonghe's talent, Liang Shiqiu said she was "multi-talented";
Shen Yinmo said her calligraphy was "Ming people learn Jin people's characters";
Boston University Professor Bai Qianxian said: "Her calligraphy, like her personality and cultivation, is light, but also has an elegant temperament.
Ouyang Zhongshi, president of the Chinese Calligraphy Association, believes: "She is not a calligrapher in the general sense, but a scholar. No matter the characters, paintings, poems as well as kunqu, all of them are of top quality and very rare. She consistently maintained her original style and was extremely high in style. Like the kunqu, she sang the real, unaltered ones. Calligraphy is very refined in running script and zhang cao, especially zhang cao is extremely elegant, which was already the best in that era."
