What are the universal values of our people?
Universal (fitness) values, as the name implies, are universally applicable values. It transcends nationalities, races, national boundaries and beliefs, is the common value of all mankind, is the lowest measure of right and wrong, good and evil, or the bottom line of human morality. Specifically, universal values include three basic elements: fairness, justice and freedom.
Fairness does not mean the absolute average of material wealth, it means the balance of competitive opportunities and the equality of basic human rights. Simply put, no privilege means that everyone is equal before the rules and the law.
Justice is truth, the final result of people's actions and things, and it must conform to logic and ethics. More generally speaking, justice means that good is rewarded with good, and evil with evil. To clarify the facts, restore the truth, punish evil and promote good is to safeguard justice.
Freedom has two meanings. First, it refers to people's basic rights and free will. Second, each of us should learn to restrain our own behavior, bear the necessary responsibilities, not interfere with the free will and inherent rights of others, and not violate the principles of fairness and justice.
Without fairness and justice, freedom cannot be established; Without fairness and freedom, justice is impossible. Therefore, fairness, justice and freedom are interdependent and inseparable, and they are a whole concept.
Universal values include but are not limited to: democracy, freedom, rule of law, human rights and so on. The state has the obligation to defend the inherent rights of its citizens, such as the right to life, the right to be free from fear, the right to have children, the right to know, the right to be free from want, and the freedom of thought and speech.
Universal value may not be a universal truth, but it is indeed an important achievement of human civilization at present.
The existence, foundation and connotation of universal values are still controversial in Chinese mainland academic circles.
