What holiday custom is stealing vegetables?

Lantern Festival.

Vegetable Stealing Festival, also known as Vegetable Stealing Day, is a popular traditional custom in some parts of China. It is held every year on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, that is, the Lantern Festival. On the festival day, girls will steal other people's food in droves. It is forbidden to steal from one's own family or friends with the same surname, because stealing vegetables is related to one's marriage.

"Stealing vegetables festival" is widely popular in the southwest of China. So far, many provinces, cities and ethnic groups have shown great interest in this legendary festival. Just like Chongqing and Sichuan now, on the fifteenth day of the first month, people will quietly step on vegetable fields during the day to see which vegetables grow well, and then finish their dinner early. When it gets dark, adults will take their children to other people's fields to "steal vegetables". Just like in Hunan, people call this festival "stealing vegetables".
