Placement of Traditional Family Seats in China
Elders sit against the wall (generally facing south). Elders sit on the left (son, son-in-law), on the right (daughter or daughter-in-law) and opposite (grandson or granddaughter). The seat by the wall refers to the seat where the elders usually sit, but even if others sit on the side of the wall, that seat is still called the top seat.
