The building structure of the exhibition hall is a shear wall and long-span steel roof. The main body consists of 66 arched steel beams 40 meters long and weighing 17 tons, forming a perfect structure with multiple waves. There are many Buddha eyes on the front of the roof, which complement the giant Buddha in the grottoes. The building is 6 meters underground and the highest point on the ground is 5.8 meters. The southern end goes directly to the performing arts center through the Buddhist shrine passage, and the northern end is sunken plaza, and the main scenic spot of the grottoes can be reached through the wooden plank road.
The central hall of the exhibition hall covers an area of 4800 square meters. On the east side of the front hall, there is a restored Buddha statue with the same proportion in the 20th hole. On the front, there is a giant oil painting. Visitors enter the main exhibition hall by visiting. There are 24 projectors in the main exhibition hall. On the 70-meter-long screens on both sides, the glorious history of the Northern Wei Dynasty and the excavation process of Yungang Grottoes are displayed through multimedia images, showing the grand occasion of imperial Buddha. The theme exhibition halls on both sides show the unearthed cultural relics in Yungang Grottoes and surrounding areas respectively. The first, second and third exhibition halls display daily necessities, building components, stone carvings and unearthed cultural relics related to the excavation of Yungang Grottoes in the Northern Wei Dynasty; The fourth exhibition hall uses multimedia interactive form to display the images of Dunhuang, Longmen, Maijishan and Bamiyan grottoes in Yungang, and compare the artistic forms of these grottoes. The small cinema mainly shows the mental journey of Buddhist practice. Each exhibition area is also equipped with a number of large-screen multimedia to interact with tourists, making the display content more colorful. Rest areas and shops are for tourists to rest and buy Yungang souvenirs.
The main function of the exhibition hall is to explain the rise and development of the Northern Wei Dynasty to tourists with unique architectural forms and a large number of unearthed cultural relics in the collection, combined with modern high-tech sound and photoelectric means.
