The Influence of Watching English Movies on College Students' English Learning
English movies are an information medium that integrates pictures, words, sounds and images. It can create a vivid English learning environment, stimulate college students' enthusiasm and initiative in learning English, and improve learning efficiency. Through questionnaires and experiments, this paper studies how English movies affect learners' language knowledge structure and psychological quality, introduces the cultural and artistic characteristics of English movies, and summarizes the unique learning methods of watching English movies.
Key words: English movies, language knowledge structure, psychological quality, cultural and artistic appreciation.
First, the structure of language knowledge
Ushinski, a famous educator, once said, "Learning without any interest will stifle students' willingness to master knowledge." (Yang, 2005: 9) Nowadays, English movies are favored by more and more contemporary college students. Appropriate use of movies for learning can promote their interest in learning English. Therefore, we used the audio-visual class of Foreign Languages Institute to conduct a two-month (eight times a month) film audio-visual and speaking experiment for more than 200 English majors. The results are as follows:
1) After this intensive training, about 70% people's listening accuracy has really improved. Moreover, from the perspective of neurophysiology, vision and hearing belong to two different sensory nerve pathways, and there are different excitement points in the cerebral cortex. Generally speaking, the excitement of one exciting point will affect the excitement of another exciting point [1]. So this data also supports the statement that movies can improve listening.
2) In the two-month experiment, one data also showed that about 73% people imitated the dialogue while watching, and achieved remarkable results; About 68% often imitate rhetoric, logic, vagueness, euphemism, humor, mechanical change and other oral expression skills. After repeated practice, their oral expression features also show some idiosyncrasies and diversities, which get rid of the influence of China's traditional rigid grammar teaching method and improve their expressive ability. At the same time, movies strengthen students' sensitivity to intonation, mood and rhythm of sentences, greatly improve their interest in learning, and are an effective way to imitate spoken English, thus improving their oral expression ability.
3) 1973, an experiment by Lionel Standing of Bishop University in Canada proved that a picture is equivalent to at least 10 words [1]. At the same time, during the experiment, about 70% of the learners found that their vocabulary increased a lot on the basis of the original. Moreover, linguist Terrel also believes that foreign language learners can better understand and express themselves in foreign languages if they have enough vocabulary and little grammar knowledge. Therefore, this method is increasingly favored by learners.
4) In the experiment, about 98% people often encounter new words or strange sentences in movies, and about 68% people make a series of organic logical reasoning and subjective judgments according to the language environment at that time, and the guessed meaning is very close to the original. Such as the dialogue in the movie Forrest Gump: Forrest Gump: I thought I would go back to Vietnam, but they thought that the best way for me to fight against society was to play table tennis. So I am in the secret service, traveling all over the country, using the word "veteran" to cheer up all the injured veterans and show how to play table tennis. It's a new word, but some students guessed that it meant something like this: First, combined with the historical background at that time, I learned that people who returned from the Vietnam War were injured again, so the general idea should be wounded soldiers or veterans. It can be seen that watching movies to learn English is not only a manifestation of improving self-initiative, but also a special ability-guessing words and understanding meanings.
5) Exercise translation ability. As a part of literary translation, film and television translation requires translators to have a certain foundation in Chinese and foreign languages. It is found that watching the same movie repeatedly can cultivate two translation abilities: impromptu translation and simultaneous interpretation [2].
When the characters in the film stop short conversations, learners can immediately translate orally. In the experiment, it was found that 97% students lacked this ability. Because of the great difficulty, learners should not only master the knowledge of language, system and cultural background, but also have strong language expression ability, reaction and memory ability, information combination ability and superb improvisation level. Therefore, as long as continuous listening and speaking training is carried out, learners' consecutive interpretation ability will be improved. In addition, due to the needs of the story or the director's intentional arrangement, sometimes the dialogue between characters is continuous or uninterrupted, and learners can practice simultaneous interpretation through such a context. However, during the experiment, it was found that the number of people practicing simultaneous interpretation was almost zero. Because the translator and the dialogue are required to be conducted almost at the same time, but due to the structural differences between English and Chinese and the urgent rhythm, the ear, brain and dictation are conducted at the same time, so the translator should not only maintain a high degree of concentration, but also maintain the differences between half sentences, or intermittently translate one sentence slower than the dialogue.
6) Learn to use classic sentence patterns. For example, "Gone with the Wind" "Tomorrow is another day." ; Casablanca "There are so many towns, so many towns and so many pubs in the world, but she walked into mine." ; Brave heart: "fight, you may die." Run, you can at least live for a while. Died in your bed many years later. Would you like to exchange? All the days from today to that day, just for an opportunity, just an opportunity, come back here and tell our enemies that they can take our lives, but they will never take our freedom! " Wait a minute.
Second, psychological quality.
Psychological quality refers to the sum total of various internal and deep-seated psychological characteristics displayed by individuals in their activities. It consists of three factors: psychological potential, psychological characteristics and psychological quality. The influence of English movies on the psychological quality of contemporary college students is also worth thinking about. Understanding and mastering this point is of great significance to correctly guide future study and life.
1) psychological potential. When watching movies, learners' psychological potential will also be developed, and excellent intellectual and non-intellectual potential will also be cultivated. In this regard, we conducted a questionnaire survey on more than 200 non-English majors. The results show that: ① About 80% of the students think that their observation ability can be improved. For example, watch The Da Vinci Code, a work full of complex suspense, western religious history, theology and psychological thriller. If a student has strong observation, he can find details that others can't easily find, gain more information and knowledge, and thus enrich his experience. ② About 90% students think that their memory has improved. Learning English by watching movies can not only cultivate good memory, but also master more foreign language knowledge. ③ About 76% students feel that their imagination and thinking ability have been exercised and enriched. For example, watching such mystery films as Prison Break, The Shawshank Redemption, Magician and Fatal Magic, without agile thinking, it is difficult to find the essential characteristics and internal laws between things. High-level thinking and good thinking quality are important conditions for improving learning. In a sense, imagination is more important than knowledge; Thinking is an indirect and general reflection of the objective reality by the human brain, and it is a more advanced and complicated process. About 75% of the students feel that they can improve their attention to things. Attention is not only the gateway to intellectual activities, but also the organizer and maintainer of intellectual activities. Having good attention quality will also improve the efficiency of English learning.
2) Psychological characteristics mean that everyone is born with a variety of psychological characteristics, such as the directness of perception, the volatility and infectivity of emotions, and the adjustment of will. However, in the complicated and unchanging film and television communication, due to the virtuality, uncertainty and multi-dimensional interpersonal relationship in the films, and the vulgarity and violence in western films such as American films, about 7 1% of the respondents in the survey agree that some college students have poor resistance to bad temptations and often deliberately seek some pornographic and violent information out of curiosity or impulse.
3) Psychological quality refers to a person's gradual formation under acquired conditions, such as acute observation, independence and criticism of thinking, emotional inclination, persistence and self-control of will, rigor and creativity of rational power, etc. According to the survey, about 87% people think that due to the influence of western multicultural values, the value choice of contemporary college students in China tends to be blind, which makes some people lack the internal tension of psychological mechanisms such as emotion, responsibility, belief and ideal based on morality and value.
Three. Cultural and artistic appreciation
After years of research, linguists have proved that anyone who wants to learn a foreign language well and wants to learn English well without knowing the western cultural traditions, history, customs, lifestyles and even life details is simply whimsical (Yang Qingping, 2000: 23). English movies are a kind of cultural carrier that can reflect national beliefs and emotions, so that learners can get in touch with various western cultural customs and enjoy truly meaningful culture and art without going abroad.
1) Understand the personalities and spiritual tendencies of other nationalities. Take Hollywood western feature films as an example. It is based on the exploitation of the western wasteland by Americans in the second half of the19th century, which fully embodies the national character and spiritual tendency of Americans. For example, the movie great train robbery. It outlines a series of opposites centered on civilization and barbarism; The cowboy, sheriff, rancher, gangster and Indian in the film represent good and evil respectively.
2) Understand the characteristics of the times and social status quo with novel ideas. Such films include Biography of Xu Bin, Gone with the Wind, The Sound of Music, Broken Bridge and so on. For example, the classic movie Broken Blue Bridge, through vivid stories and descriptions of people's inner world, reveals the destruction of people's happy lives by war and causes great trauma to people's hearts. Its anti-war tendency is very obvious; Slander British orthodoxy.
3) Understand the traditional history, customs and daily life of western countries. For example, The Birth of a Country, with the American Civil War as the background, describes the historical story that whites were killed, robbed and raped by so-called brutal blacks in the south, and even had to organize the Ku Klux Klan to jointly fight against blacks, with a strong racist tendency; Citizen Kane mocked the political, economic, cultural and moral problems of capitalist society by describing Kane, carried forward the spirit of critical realism represented by Chaplin, exposed the ugly history of American monopoly bourgeoisie and attacked the evils of capitalist system. One-night stand shows the complex emotional relationship between the rich and the poor, and reflects the people's desire for a happy life in the economic crisis.
4) Understand foreign classic drama art.. For example, the artistic structure of Broken Blue Bridge is the traditional dramatic structure. Its beginning laid a reasonable and credible foundation for the later tragic ending; Developing some potential class differences, the contradiction has deepened to the extreme; The climax is manifested in the contest between pure love and traditional ideas; Show the ending after the second climax. The narrative technique of the film is the traditional flashback technique: from the end, there is a complete long memory in the middle. It is also excellent in detail handling: the details of repeated "auspicious symbols"; Look at yourself in the mirror and erase the details of lipstick.
Four. conclusion
Through investigation and study, this paper knows that the way of watching movies is different from the traditional classroom teaching method. It is scientific to some extent: learning is integrated into interesting film and television works, so that learners can actively participate in English learning and application. Therefore, college students can use this valuable multimedia resource to deepen their understanding of British and American cultural background knowledge, master the differences between different cultures, improve their English learning ability, learn to study critically, and cultivate a correct and unique outlook on life and the world.
