The national flag of Japan, also known as the "Sun Flag" (Hinomaru Flag, Hinomaru Flag), has a red sun in the center of the flag, reflecting the white flag. Legend has it that Japan was created by the Sun God, and the Emperor is the descendant of the Sun God. The flag was first used by the Emperor in the 8th century A.D. and was called the "Emperor's Flag". It was then flown during the Japanese invasion of Korea, and from the mid-19th century onwards, it became the flag of Japan, flying on all Japanese ships, and in 1870 it was officially designated as the flag of the Japanese Navy, with the white color symbolizing sanctity, peace, purity, and righteousness, and the red color symbolizing sincerity, enthusiasm, vitality, and fraternity. Ironically, the Hinomaru Flag became infamous as the symbol of the Japanese invasion forces during World War II. After the end of World War II, the Hinomaru Flag became the surrogate national flag of Japan, but was not officially recognized as the national flag of Japan until as late as August 13, 1999 due to the controversy surrounding its symbolism during the war of aggression. The flag also appeared in World War II as Japan's army and navy flag in the form of a red sun with 16 red rays, and has remained Japan's naval flag since 1954 until the present day
