What do Koreans eat on the solstice in winter?
On this day, Koreans will also eat a specific food-the long-standing winter solstice red bean porridge. Korean folks call the winter solstice "pressing the year" or "off-year". From the perspective of Yin and Yang, after the winter solstice, Yin will gradually turn into Yang, which means that the sun is resurrected and indicates that a new year is coming. Therefore, there is a folk saying that "only eating winter solstice porridge is a year long".
Koreans have been eating whole grain rice for a long time. When Silla was in China, the 15th day of the first month was called "taboo day", and rice with five grains was used to worship crows. The article "shooting the piano box" recorded in the first volume of the History of the Three Kingdoms is the same as the content of folk sacrificial food. On the fifteenth day of the first month, farmers use glutinous rice, rhubarb rice, millet, sorghum rice and red beans to make five-grain rice and eat it.
