What is disease cognition?

The cognition of life and disease in TCM is a kind of medical knowledge based on the traditional culture of the Chinese nation to understand the phenomenon of human life and the law of disease. The knowledge of life and disease in TCM originated from the legendary Huangdi and Qibo, and the knowledge system of life and disease in TCM marked by Huangdi Neijing has been formed for more than 2000 years. The knowledge of life and disease in traditional Chinese medicine mainly includes yin and yang, five elements, dirty images, meridians, disease syndromes, etiology and pathogenesis, syndrome differentiation, treatment principles and methods, five movements and six qi, etc. The understanding method of life and disease in TCM is a summary of the experience of preventing and treating diseases formed in the long-term labor production process in ancient China. On May 20th, 2006, it was approved by the State Council to be included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.

Syndrome differentiation and treatment is to diagnose diseases by looking, smelling, asking and feeling, analyze the diagnosis results, draw comprehensive conclusions and establish treatment principles. Treatment principles and methods are the basic principles and methods that must be observed in the treatment of diseases, and are the treatment rules summarized by Chinese medicine in long-term clinical practice, which mainly include adjusting yin and yang, strengthening body resistance and eliminating evil, treating both the symptoms and root causes, depending on people, time and local conditions. Five movements and six qi are systematic knowledge to study and explore the influence of astronomical, meteorological and phenological changes in nature on human health and diseases. Traditional Chinese medicine has a unique theory and method for understanding diseases and syndromes. Chinese medicine believes that the occurrence of diseases is a manifestation of the growth and decline of good and evil. Huangdi Neijing put forward the disease view that "healthy qi exists in the interior, evil is not feasible" and "evil combined with qi deficiency". A great deal of disease knowledge was recorded in the early documents such as Treatise on Febrile Diseases and Treatise on Miscellaneous Diseases, and 67 diseases were recorded in the Theory of Staging of Pathogens in Sui Dynasty, with 1720 syndromes. The understanding of life and diseases in TCM is the core of TCM knowledge, which plays a guiding role in TCM health preservation, diagnosis, treatment, prescription, TCM, acupuncture and clinical practice. However, under the influence of western medicine, the number of people who can understand and pass on this knowledge is decreasing day by day, facing the dilemma of preservation and development, and urgently needs to be respected, protected and developed. The state attaches great importance to the protection of intangible cultural heritage. On May 20th, 2006, the cognitive method of TCM life and disease was approved by the State Council to be included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list. On June 5th, 2007, Lu, Yan Dexin, Wu Xianzhong and Chen Keji of Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine were identified as the representative inheritors of this cultural heritage project by the Ministry of Culture and included in the list of 226 representative inheritors of the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage projects.
