Which are the world's top ten ancient civilizations?
Egyptian Civilization (3100-525 BC): located along the Nile River. Major achievements were the building of large temples and pyramids out of stone and the invention of hieroglyphics.
Babylonian civilization (1900 - 538 BC): located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers (now in Iraq). The main achievement was the development of laws, with the Code of Hammurabi being one of the oldest written laws; the earliest calculation of minutes and seconds in base 60.
Phoenician Civilization (1100 - 842 BC): located on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The main achievement was the invention of an alphabet system (the later Greek alphabet was based on the Phoenician alphabet).
Hebrew civilization (1000-587 BC): located in what is now Israel and Jordan. The main achievement was the creation of great literature, most importantly the entire Old Testament of the Bible, written around 900-150 BC.
Assyrian Civilization (800 - 612 BC): located in the Tigris River Valley in what is now Iraq. The main achievement was the formation of armies that used iron weapons.
Greek Civilization (800 BC - 197 BC): located in the southern part of what is now Greece. The main achievements were the construction of many majestic buildings; the writing of many great poems and plays; the production of many outstanding scientists and philosophers; and the pioneering of the concept of democracy.
Persian civilization (700-331 BC): located in the vast area from the Indus River to the Aegean Sea (at the height of the empire). The main achievements were the construction of many large and majestic palaces made of clay, brick and stone; the appearance of many legendary beasts in their frescoes; and the creation of a postal system using pony couriers.
Roman Civilization (735-476 BC): Located in the very vast land stretching from Rome westward to England and eastward to Mesopotamia, Roman culture spread to all the countries around the Mediterranean Sea during the heyday of ancient Rome. The main achievements were the training of many excellent administrative officials; the first strategic tactics to break through from the center and thus control the surrounding area.
Huaxia Civilization: also known as the Chinese Civilization, it is one of the oldest civilizations in the world and the longest lasting civilization in the world. It originated in the Yellow River Valley. It is generally believed that there are three direct sources of Chinese civilization, namely, the Yellow River civilization, the Yangtze River civilization and the northern grassland civilization, and that Chinese civilization is the result of the exchange, fusion and sublimation of the three regional civilizations. The main achievement of Chinese civilization is the invention of the ancient hieroglyphic script - oracle bone writing, but also in poetry, philosophy, bronze casting, architecture and other aspects of outstanding creation and contribution.
