The architecture of St. Petersburg is characterized by tower-like buildings in a royal style.

Listed as the eighth most visited city by UNESCO, St. Petersburg was the capital of Russia from 1712 to 1918, and the Hermitage in the center of the city was the Tsar's palace at the time. The October Revolution began with the shelling of the Winter Palace by the cruiser Avror, which was moored on the Neva River.
