Wahid claimed to be a descendant of Zheng He's entourage to the Western Seas, and admitted that his ancestors came from Fujian. After the fall of Suharto's government, almost every Indonesian government will have Chinese ministers. Kwik Kian Gie, a famous Indonesian economist, became the first minister, and then Feng Huilan became the first female minister in China. In 2002, China Spring Festival was even designated as a national festival in Indonesia by Megawati (daughter of Su Jianuo), then Indonesian President.

However, the anti-Chinese sentiment formed by Indonesia's anti-Chinese policy for many years is also difficult to eliminate in a short time. For example, although Wanxue Zhong once had a high support rate, he was eventually dismissed for religious reasons related to ethnic groups and sentenced to two years' imprisonment. To some extent, Wanxue Zhong's experience is also a microcosm of the current situation of Indonesian Chinese society. That is, the political status has been greatly improved and the discrimination suffered is much less than in the past. However, the decrease of discrimination does not mean that it has disappeared. Indonesian Chinese sometimes encounter hidden discrimination and even unfair treatment. But on the whole, the status of Chinese in Indonesia has been greatly improved, which can be said to have changed greatly compared with the situation before 1998.
