According to the main data of the sixth national census in 2010: the Han Chinese have the largest proportion of the population, accounting for about 91.51% of the country's total population. The total population of the other 55 ethnic groups is small, accounting for about 8.49% or so of the country's total population, so they are called ethnic minorities. The population of unrecognized ethnic groups is 640,101.

The most populous of the 55 ethnic minorities is the Zhuang, with a population of more than 16 million (2000); the least is the Lhoba, with a population of less than 3,000 (2000) (not including the 600,000 Lhoba in the disputed southern Tibetan region of China and India).
