What is Hinterland

Hinterland is the inland area located behind a port city that supplies the port with export goods and sells imported goods. The size and economic potential of the hinterland is influenced by topography, climate, rivers, natural resources, population and economic factors.

In addition to its traditional meaning, the term hinterland has now been extended to refer to the adjoining areas that are located around a city that is generally an economic and cultural center. These areas are influenced by the central city, providing it with a market for goods and sales, as well as receiving its cultural services.
