Was the author of The Mirror and the Lamp - Romantic Literary Theory and Critical Tradition a foreigner?
Synopsis This book deals primarily with the theory of poetry as it arose in England during the first forty years of the nineteenth century, and to a lesser extent with the other major forms of art. The emphasis in this book is on a ****similarity of criticism, which is the reason for the deliberate choice of "Romantic" criticism to be dealt with; but I believe that this does not mean that the many important differences between the various writers are ignored. Some of these writers are concerned with the nature of poetry and art, some with its psychological origins, some with its structural varieties, some with its major norms, and some with the relationship of poetry or art to other major issues of human concern. Most of the critics discussed in this book were critics of their time who had unique insights and lasting influence, rather than the mediocre book reviewers whose impact on Ichabod readers was more immediate but often short-lived. -View All>> Author Biography M.H.
