Gannan tea-picking opera, commonly known as "Camellia Lantern Opera" and "Lantern Opera", has the reputation of "the flower of Hakka art", which originated in Jiulongshan District, Anyuan County, Jiangxi Province and has a history of more than 300 years. Since the Ming Dynasty, stimulated by national economic activities and population growth, tea production in the south of the Yangtze River has gradually flourished, and there has also been a corresponding upsurge of "tea culture" among the people, which has received positive responses from people from all walks of life.
For example, in the poems of Tang Xianzu (1550-1616), the phrase "picking tea in the spring breeze in a lonely dock" appeared; In his immortal work Peony Pavilion, when Du Baolai, the magistrate of Nan 'an, went to the suburbs to "persuade farmers", a pair of women appeared on the stage with tea baskets and sang "Take Grain Rain, pick new tea, have flags and guns." …"
The Biography of Mr. Xiong Xiufu in the Family Tree of Xiong Family in Yaling, Shicheng County, which was rebuilt during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1573- 1620), also records that "every morning, the seats are always full, and the tea-picking songs are sung by transplanting rice seedlings by the stream, ...", which shows that the tea-picking songs in Gannan were quite popular at that time.
Tea-picking songs are widely sung in the south of the Yangtze River with different names. One of them begins with one year 12 months, and sings about the process of tea farmers planting, picking, making, tasting and selling tea, and is performed by 12 tea girls carrying tea baskets. Later, from December to the first month, it was called "tea picking", and the characters were different from songs.
