Dazhai Village is a small mountain village in Xiyang County, Shanxi Province. Dazhai is a poor mountain village with very bad natural conditions. After liberation, under the leadership of Chen Yonggui and Guo Fenglian, the people of Dazhai were determined to organize themselves and change the backward appearance of the mountain village. From 1953, it took ten years to build a sponge field with high and stable yield per mu 1000 kg on "seven ditches, eight beams and one slope".

However, in 1963, Dazhai suffered a catastrophic flood, with landslides, ground fissures, collapsed houses and kilns, and people's lives were very difficult.
