Dong Xiao's timbre

The sound principle of flute and flute is exactly the same, that is, the airflow (that is, the wind) ejected from the mouth seam reaches the mouthpiece of the flute, and after being split by the sharp edge of the mouthpiece, it produces vortex and forms a side tone with no stable pitch. After the edge sound resonates with the air column in the tube, a stable pitch can be obtained.

Because of the different excitation and sound production methods of Xiao and Di (the Di has a flute membrane, but the Di doesn't), not only the volume is very different, but also the timbre is very different. The timbre of the flute is thick, high, crisp and loud, while the timbre of the flute is weak, beautiful and elegant.

Because of the low volume, Dong Xiao is not as widely used as a flute, and manufacturers are not as particular about the production of Dong Xiao as a flute. So it is not easy to find a flute with pure timbre. There are three factors that affect Dong Xiao's timbre, namely, whether the materials are properly selected, whether the production is scientific and whether the playing method is correct.

First, material selection.

Purple bamboo is often used when you are in the morning. Bamboo should be aged (4-5 years old), the fiber should be fine and dense, bamboo should be dried in the shade, dried thoroughly, and the thickness should be appropriate. 4-5-year-old bamboos are the strongest and have the largest bulk density. It is too tender under 3 years old, and it has gradually aged over 5 years old. Of course, it is better to compact bamboo. For the same thickness of bamboo, it is better to choose high quality bamboo, because this kind of bamboo is not only high density, but also thick, which is convenient for grinding the ideal inner diameter when making.

Nine sections are the most important for Xiao. Because in a certain length, the more nodes, the closer the bamboo is to the root. Bamboo near the roots has a large density and a large diameter difference between the two ends, which is very beneficial to the singing of * * *. Now, some people choose materials for the name of nine festivals and leave the flute body very long. This not only brings inconvenience to the performance, but also harms the appearance.

Second, the production process

Dong Xiao's timbre also depends on the production process. Nowadays, producers and performers, in order to pursue greater volume, have made the blowhole square and lost the charm of the flute. In fact, it is not difficult to make a good flute. The key is to blow holes well. Because of the diversity of bamboo, the opening method of blowing holes can be different, but it is better to be semicircular. The traditional mode of production is drawing board, but now this mode of production is more common in some mass production factories.

Third, the gameplay

Dong Xiao is a tenor instrument with a range four degrees lower than that of Qu Di, and the range is similar to that of flute.
