The invention of wedge shoes
1927, seeing the shortage of experienced shoemakers in Italy, Ferragamo decided to go back to his hometown and open a shop in Florence, with as many as 60 employees. At that time, he was the first person to mass-produce handmade shoes. However, after the 1929 Wall Street crash, Ferragamo also declared bankruptcy on 1933 and was forced to concentrate on developing the local market. Leather was restricted because of the war, but it actually encouraged Ferragamo's design concept. He made the vamp with two materials: dyed coconut fiber and cellophane, the sole with wood and cork, with high-heeled platform shoes and sunken heel, and painted or engraved with colorful geometric patterns or decorated with golden glass. In 1936, Ferragamo designed the beautiful concave heel of the cork. Because of the shortage of iron pieces, he could not continue to add iron pieces to the arch of his shoes. In fact, these high-heeled shoes are not a novel concept, but his design made these styles popular and won the favor of women during World War II. This is the style of wedge shoes that continue to this day.
