This story is now considered as one of the four major folk stories in China, and the other three are Legend of the White Snake, Jiang Meng and the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl. In 2004, six cities in China cooperated and submitted a formal application to UNESCO through the Ministry of Culture of China in 2006, requesting that the legendary representative of human oral and intangible heritage be included in the World Heritage List.
Liang Zhu tells the love tragedy of China legends Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. Their names make up the title of the story. The title is usually abbreviated as Liang Zhu.
