What is Jibaro?

Jibaro, meaning "man of the forested mountains of Puerto Rico," is based on the Taíno people of Puerto Rico, a representative of Latin American indigenous peoples. farmers of the land.

Today's working Puerto Ricans still proudly call themselves jibarros, and a monument to this effect has been erected in Salinas, Puerto Rico, in honor of the hard-working, courageous, and down-to-earth jibarros.

Characteristics of the Jibaros

The Jibaros originally continued the matriarchal system, where women tended to be free and strong. But under the guns of Europe, Taino women were reduced to commodities used for exchange and faced endless kidnapping and abuse.

While the Taino people were written off as "extinct," historians have discovered through DNA testing that Taino genes are still active in the blood of Puerto Ricans, and that there are still a group of modern-day self-identified Taino people.
