Wang Xiaotao has been engaged in the scientific research of authentic medicinal materials and processing of traditional Chinese medicines for more than 50 years, collecting, sorting out and compiling the processing experience of traditional Chinese medicines in past dynasties, and has successively compiled and published nine monographs on processing of traditional Chinese medicines, including Summary of Processing of Chinese Herbal Pieces, Integration of Processing Experience of Traditional Chinese Medicines and Summary of Processing Data of Traditional Chinese Medicines in Past Dynasties. Among them, Integration of Processing Experience of Traditional Chinese Medicine won the Science and Technology Achievement Award 1978 of the National Medical and Health Science and Technology Conference of the Ministry of Health, the first prize of the Science and Technology Achievement Award of Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine 19965438, and the Collection of Processing Methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine won the first National Excellent Medical History Literature Book Silver Award 1. There are more than one professional paper 1 10 published in the Collection of Materials of Traditional Chinese Medicine Processing in Past Dynasties. Among them, Research on the Historical Evolution of Rehmannia glutinosa Processing is regarded as a model of literature research on traditional Chinese medicine processing, which has played a positive role in the research on the historical evolution of traditional Chinese medicine processing in various places. Wang Xiaotao is the first tutor in National Medical Products Administration (Beijing area).

Wang Xiaotao has done a lot of work in revitalizing traditional pharmaceutical technology, establishing and perfecting the subject of Chinese medicine processing, cultivating professionals in Chinese medicine processing and realizing the modernization of traditional processing technology. He advocated that the scientific research of traditional Chinese medicine should be guided by the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, and on the basis of inheriting the theory of traditional Chinese medicine and pharmaceutical technology of traditional Chinese medicine, according to the characteristics of dialectical medication of traditional Chinese medicine, using traditional and modern scientific methods, systematically and scientifically study the variety and quality of traditional pharmaceutical technology and authentic medicinal materials, clarify its scientific basic principles, improve traditional pharmaceutical technology and equipment, and promote the industrialization and modernization of traditional pharmaceutical technology, thus improving and enriching the academic level of traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese medicine processing. He put forward the theories of "synergism of Chinese medicine processing" and "cybernetics of Chinese medicine processing", which played a guiding role in the scientific research of Chinese medicine processing. As early as 1960s, he established the first Chinese medicine processing laboratory in China to study toxic Chinese medicines. During the "Seventh Five-Year Plan" and "Eighth Five-Year Plan" period, he undertook the national and ministerial-level key research projects on the processing of traditional Chinese medicine, and systematically studied the processing evolution, processing principle, processing technology and quality of toxic traditional Chinese medicine pieces such as Pinellia ternata, Typhonium Typhonium, Rhizoma Arisaematis, Phytolacca acinosa and Daphne genkwa. The scientific research achievements of the departments he led and the research groups he participated in won 7 national, ministerial and bureau-level achievements and 13 hospital-level achievements.

Train 2 master students, doctoral students 1 person and successors 1 person. He has taught Chinese medicine processing for many times for Chinese medicine processing teachers, western medicine Chinese medicine classes, Chinese medicine classes and international advanced students.
