European Antique and Art Knowledge Popularization Series 1
Every time I go to Paris, I go to see a photo frame company. The boss is a French uncle. He sells old picture frames and makes new ones. What is really beautiful is the antique old photo frame. Really old picture frames are all pasted by hand with thin pure gold foil, which takes a lot of time and energy and feels very smooth. It is essentially different from painting several layers of gold paint. Real antiques such as furniture and mirrors are made of gold foil. This technology is now used exclusively for decoration.
One of the ways to distinguish an antique picture frame is to look at the front of the picture frame. For example, this antique picture frame with gold foil is really expensive. Its basic production method is to stick gold foil on the outside of wood. Wooden picture frames are first made of wood, then painted with gypsum, then painted with red primer, and finally pasted with gold foil. Gypsum is very fragile, which is one of the reasons why antique picture frames are expensive. Gold foil is actually a kind of light and thin gold paper. Therefore, it is difficult to identify the dividing line after the picture frame is pasted, and there are shallow lines across it. If there is such a dividing line, it is gold foil, and if it is gold paint, it is thicker vertical stripes. The second way to distinguish antique picture frames is to look at the back. The back of the antique photo frame must be the eyes of many old nails. Wood is generally mottled, and natural patina and aging have eroded. This is beyond the reach of a new picture frame. It's easy to tell if you watch too much. Therefore, the antique picture frame with pure gold foil is definitely expensive, and many advanced antique oil paintings are also framed with gold foil. If you think about it briefly, you will know that real good things can't be cheap. France pays special attention to the inheritance of traditional crafts, which also makes European antiques valuable.
An exquisite antique picture frame involves a lot of technical and material expertise. What kind of wood, what year of wood, and what kind of patterns are carved? Is it French baroque style in17th century or Spanish court style in18th century? Everyone is particular. In addition to wooden photo frames with pure gold foil, there are many other color and material photo frames. What kind of picture and what kind of frame are related to artistic aesthetics, so I won't go into details here, and I'll talk about it later.
All my superficial knowledge is learned by practice. Thank you for selflessly sharing my knowledge and experience with my friends on the road of my growth. Thank you! I love art, both classical and contemporary. I am obsessed with Chinese and western antiques with historical stories. Since I opened a gallery with my partners, Harry and Qingqing, who are equally crazy about art, I have found that there is no end to learning, new gains will be made every day, and life is constantly opening up new oases. So now I like to record these experiences and share them with you.
