How to Play the Role of Excellent Traditional Culture in Ideological and Political Education

The power of culture first lies in establishing people's world outlook and methodology. In China, ideological and political education is the main task. However, due to the need of ideological propaganda, the ideological and political education courses that began in the 1950s often emphasized politics over ideas. In the historical period of relatively single values, simple political education can still play a certain role. With the influence of globalization, values have become more diversified, and indoctrination and slogan-style political education have been difficult to achieve results, or even counterproductive. Therefore, it is necessary to integrate traditional culture learning into ideological and political education led by Marxism.

It is not difficult to bring traditional cultural education into ideological and political education in the new period. In fact, the traditional culture of China contains the values and methodology that need to be advocated in building Socialism with Chinese characteristics. For example, "cultivate one's morality, keep one's family in order, govern the country and level the world" in traditional culture complements the socialist core values of "prosperity, democracy, civilization, harmony, freedom, equality, justice, rule of law, patriotism, professionalism, honesty and friendliness". The patriotic tradition of "every man is responsible for the rise and fall of the world", the national spirit of "Heaven is strong, gentlemen are constantly striving for self-improvement", the great love feelings of "benevolent people love" and "harmony but difference", the sense of anxiety of "enjoying the world but worrying about it", the principle of being a man with "harmony but difference" and the thinking mode of "harmony but difference" are all what we should have.

However, it is not easy to reform the ideological and political education model for half a century. It has been a long time since China started the "two courses" education reform, but it has had little effect. The main reason is that the single political education barrier has not been broken, and the old political education curriculum still occupies the main position. Therefore, the curriculum reform of ideological and political education will bear the brunt. Traditional culture course should be offered as an important course of ideological and political education, so that ideological and political education can complement each other. The selection and compilation of teaching materials should be systematic and authoritative, avoid teaching traditional cultural knowledge in order to serve political education, systematically sort out and study traditional culture, and at the same time strengthen the training of educators to form an organic and unified overall atmosphere of traditional cultural education.
