What happened to the folk "summer boat" in the south in midsummer?
Sending Xia Zhou is a traditional folk cultural activity in Jiaojiang, Zhejiang. During the Tongzhi period of Qing Dynasty, there were frequent epidemics in Jiazhi area, especially around the summer solar terms. Scholars believe that it is caused by the Five Saints (according to legend, the Five Saints are Zhang, Liu Yuanda, Shi and Zhong, all of whom are evil spirits), so the Five Saints Temple was built by the Jianzhi River. When the villagers are sick, they pray to the five saints, make wishes, pray for getting rid of diseases and eliminate disasters, and sacrifice pigs and sheep afterwards. Jiazhi is located near the mouth of Jiaojiang River, and there are many fishermen along the river. In order to ensure the safety of one party, it was decided to collectively offer sacrifices to the five saints on the Great Summer Festival, and the offerings were sent to Jiaojiang by fishing boat along the river to confess the five saints to enjoy, as a sign of piety.
