How to classify ion exchange resins?

There are many kinds of ion exchange resins, which can be classified according to different methods and uses. The main categories are as follows.

1. According to the nature of the active group of ion exchange resin.

2. According to the type of ion exchange resin monomer.

3. According to the structure classification of ion exchange resin * * * polymers.

4. Classification according to the purpose of ion exchange resin.

Classification according to the properties of active ion exchange resin groups

1. According to the properties of active groups carried by ion exchange resins, they can be divided into cation exchange resins and anion exchange resins. They can exchange ions with cations and anions in solution respectively. Cationic resins can be divided into strongly acidic cationic resins and weakly acidic cationic resins, while anionic resins can be divided into strongly basic anionic resins and weakly basic anionic resins.

2. Strongly acidic cationic resin contains a large number of strongly acidic groups, such as sulfonic acid group -SO3H, which dissociates H+ easily in solution, so it is strongly acidic.

3. The weakly acidic cationic resin contains weakly acidic groups, such as carboxyl -COOH, which can dissociate H+ in water and become acidic. However, due to its low degree of dissociation, it is generally only weakly acidic, so it belongs to weakly acidic cationic resin.

4. Strongly basic anionic resin contains strongly basic groups, such as quaternary amino -NR3OH(R is hydrocarbyl), which can dissociate OH in water and become strongly basic.

5. Weakly basic anionic resin contains weakly basic groups, such as primary amino (also called primary amino) -NH2, secondary amino (secondary amino) -NHR and tertiary amino (tertiary amino) -NR2, which can dissociate OH- in water and become weakly basic.
