Concepts of Behaviorist Personality Theory:
Psychologists with a behaviorist orientation view consistent patterns of behavior as constraining learning, or as the result of expectations and efficacy, and are a classic form of environmental determinism in that they view behavior as a combination of bodily responses used by an organism to adapt to changes in the environment. Behaviorism is represented by Watson, Skinner and Bandura.
Behaviorism orientation is based on the behavioral aspects of personality research, there are certain advantages and limitations, so we can not simply affirm or deny, in practice, should be compatible with other personality theory orientation, complement each other.
Strengths and Weaknesses of Behaviorist Personality Theory:
The behaviorist/social learning school has both strengths and criticisms. Strengths include its empirical basis and the proven psychotherapeutic methods from which it derives. Criticisms include its neglect of some important causes of behavior, such as genetics. People have also criticized the way behavioral therapists interpret problems as observable behavior.
In Watson and Skinner's theory of behaviorism, the human being is a response machine, given a certain stimulus that leads to a certain response, and the person's consciousness is excluded from consideration.
Psychological activities such as emotion and will are not taken into account, and personality is nothing more than a series of epiphenomenal behavioral responses. Skinner was even more extreme, arguing that personality is a combination of behavioral styles and that external reinforcement can determine the formation, development, and change of personality.
Bandura's theory of man is no longer an empty organism, consciousness began to awaken. At this time, the person has an independent personality, and in the interaction with the environment and behavior to show the subject's dynamism. The reconstruction of the subject is the most important feature of Bandura's theory of personality, but also a turning point in the logical development of the behaviorist theory of personality itself.
