Taijiquan, an intangible cultural heritage, is a Chinese traditional boxing art that takes the dialectical concepts of taiji and yin and yang in the traditional Confucian and Taoist philosophies as its core idea, combines the functions of nourishing the temperament, strengthening the body and physical fitness, and combining the yin and yang and the five elements in the science of econometrics, Chinese medicine meridianology and the ancient guiding and spitting techniques to form a soft, slow, light, rigid and flexible Chinese traditional boxing art that is both internal and external. It is a kind of Chinese traditional boxing which is both internal and external, soft, slow, light and flexible.

After 1949, it was unified and adapted by the National Sports Commission as a gymnastic exercise, performance and sports competition for strengthening the body. After China's reform and opening up, it was partially restored to its original form; thus, it was subdivided into Taijiquan for martial arts, Taijiquan for gymnastic sports, and Taiji Push Hands.

There are many schools of traditional Taijiquan, and the common schools of Taijiquan are Chen's, Yang's, Wu's, Wu's, Sun's and He's, etc. Each school has its own inheritance relationship and learns from each other, and each has its own characteristics, which is a blossoming state. Because Taijiquan is a modern formation of boxing, many schools, the mass base is wide, so it is a very vitality of Chinese martial arts boxing.

In December 2020, the 15th ordinary session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed the item of Taijiquan on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO.
