Preface

November 2016, the "Twenty-four Seasons" were formally listed on the UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and together with Chinese calligraphy, which was officially inscribed on the UN Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009, as well as other outstanding traditional Chinese cultures, it has become the key to the world's further understanding of Chinese civilization.

UN Chinese Language Day was established to promote the use of Chinese in the work of the United Nations. The date has been set for the 24th solar term, "Gu Yu", to honor the contribution of Cang Jie, the "Ancestor of Chinese Writing", to the creation of Chinese characters.

In the spring of 2020, the United Nations and the NIHAO UN New Media Center invited 24 calligraphers from 24 countries on five continents, including China, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Belgium, Germany, France, the U.S., Brazil, Australia and Tanzania, to inscribe the name of a solar term to reflect the essence of Chinese calligraphy. The Chinese Calligraphy National Essence of the Chinese Calendar.

The 24 calligraphers are the outstanding representatives of Chinese calligraphy from different countries and regions, or the outstanding figures who have promoted the spread of the art of calligraphy in the world.

The 24 Solar Terms occupy an important place in traditional Chinese culture. In ancient China, sundials were used to measure the sun's rays, and the longest sun shadow of the year was designated as the "solar solstice" (also known as the long solstice, long solstice, winter solstice), while the shortest sun shadow was the "short solstice" (also known as the short solstice, summer solstice). In the spring and fall seasons, each day has the same length of day and night, so it is designated as the "spring equinox" and "autumn equinox". During the Shang Dynasty, there were only four solar terms, but during the Zhou Dynasty there were eight, and during the Qin and Han Dynasties, the 24 solar terms were fully established. In 104 B.C., Deng Ping and others formulated the "Taichu Calendar", which formally set the 24 solar terms on the calendar and clarified the astronomical positions of the 24 solar terms. The names of the twenty-four solar terms were first mentioned in the Huainanzi - Tianwenxun (淮南子-天文训).
