What's the difference between "building" and "pavilion" in traditional ancient buildings in China?

As an indispensable part of China culture with a long history, traditional ancient buildings are still amazing. However, compared with the minimalist style of modern architecture, the rigor of traditional ancient buildings is well known. Even "building" and "pavilion" are strictly distinguished. Usually, houses with more than two floors are called "buildings" or "heavy houses", which are similar to our modern buildings, but the bottom floors are hung high.

The reason why the ancient architecture culture can be passed down to this day shows that both the design concept and the architectural method are unique. Take "Lou" and "Ge" as examples. Lou is usually the main architectural form, occupying a dominant position in daily life, while Ge is a relative auxiliary position. However, since the Song Dynasty, the difference between the two gradually disappeared, and the initial concepts of the two were confused in both architectural techniques and practical applications, which also objectively reflected the architecture of the ancients.

Although different architectural forms use different names, in the final analysis, they are all to meet the housing needs of work and life, but the architectural technology of "pavilion" often makes people feel better. Unfortunately, few people distinguish the two now, and even understand the pavilion as the same concept or the same building. In fact, this view is not correct.

Generally speaking, the distinction between "building" and "pavilion" in ancient buildings is quite strict. Even if it only exists at the level of theoretical research now, as future generations, we can't forget the unique views and ideas of the ancients in the field of architecture. Therefore, we need to understand it through different channels and angles, which is also the basic premise of inheriting the ancient architecture culture.
