Why did the ancients in China wear robes?

The scope of "ancients" is very wide, but the history of "gown" is not long. The subject may be that Hanfu in various periods before the Qing Dynasty was regarded as a "gown", which is inaccurate, at least not so rigorous. Robe, like cheongsam, has a process of evolution, which is directly related to the rise of Manchu dynasty and its entry into the Central Plains. Among them, "easy to serve and shave" is regarded as a sign of submission, and "keeping hair but not hair" is regarded as a basic national policy, even to the extreme that "shaving is not as good as shaving". It is in this bloody background that the changes of cheongsam and dress are generally dry. Now so many Qing Palace dramas and braid dramas are basically like that, but they are still different from the later Republic robes. During the years of Tongzhi and Guangxu, with the rise of the Westernization Movement, foreign exchanges increased, and some new changes were made in robes and clothes, and some too complicated elements were removed, making them more concise. This is the predecessor of the dress of the Republic of China, from 1900 to the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
