The origin of the Lantern Festival
Legend has it that during the Han Dynasty, on the night of the Lantern Festival, the emperor and the empress personally went to the palace garden to enjoy the lanterns. A child named Yuanbao got lost in the sea of lanterns, and when the emperor learned of this, he immediately ordered a search for Yuanbao. Eventually, at the emperor's order, officials of all sizes in the palace went looking for him with lanterns.
The Empress invented a paper lantern called "Bao Lantern" to help find Yuanbao, and asked people to light it to show that they were looking for it. In the end, the emperor and the people in the palace found the lost Yuanbao. In honor of this momentous occasion, the 15th day of the first month of the Han Dynasty became the Lantern Festival.
The Lantern Festival is a festival of joy and reunion, where people set off lanterns, enjoy the moon, have family reunions, and eat soup dumplings (i.e., Yuanxiao) together to pray for happiness and good luck. At the same time, the Lantern Festival is also one of the important parts of traditional Chinese culture.
