Lanterns are also called cage lights and colored lights. Lantern was originally called cage lamp, because the fire candle is covered with wind-proof and light-transmitting materials, which can emit light normally in an environment with strong air convection. Lighting lamps with wind-proof and smoke-exhausting functions appeared in the Western Han Dynasty, and the representative unearthed cultural relic is Changxin Palace Lantern in the Western Han Dynasty.

The shape and decoration of lanterns can be described as appealing to both refined and popular tastes, with various forms and complete functions. From the modeling point of view, the spherical shape represented by palace lanterns is the most common, including square, cylindrical, fan-shaped, diamond-shaped, and even imitating flowers, fruits, animals, utensils and so on. In terms of decoration, auspicious patterns with festive theme are the most popular, with handles and tethers on them and tassels below, including poems, calligraphy and painting, terraces, flowers and birds, insects and fish, animals, shop names and surnames.
