Observing the patient's body, complexion, tongue body and tongue coating, and judging the location and nature of the disease according to the changes of shape and color, is called observation.

Diagnostic terminology, one of the four diagnoses. Everything that the eyes can see should be observed, including the patient's look, body shape, skin color, stool, urine, phlegm and so on. In particular, we should carefully observe the changes of tongue coating and urine. Tongue diagnosis mainly depends on tongue quality and tongue coating. For example, patients with dragon disease have red tongue and dry and rough tongue coating; The tongue coating of patients with red disease is yellow and thick; The tongue coating of Bacon's disease patients is white and slippery. Urine diagnosis is one of the most important means for Tibetan doctors to observe diseases, so the observation is very careful. The method of urine diagnosis is: the doctor first looks at the color or steaming situation of urine (the situation of urine vapor), smells and so on. Then stir the urine with a thin stick to see the change of urine foam (including the number, size, color and disappearance speed of foam), whether there is sediment and its shape, floating objects, etc. For example, the urine of patients with fever is red and yellow, with a big smell and a foul smell. The urine hot air lasts for a long time, the foam is thin and yellow, and it disappears quickly, and the sediment is like a cloud. Another example is that the sediment in urine looks like sand, which is kidney disease.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) uses vision to observe the whole body and local spirit, color, shape and posture of patients to diagnose diseases. It's one of the four diagnoses. Clinically, only by combining observation with hearing, questioning and pulse can we fully and systematically understand the condition and make a correct judgment on the disease.
