Is it really a custom in the history of China to be abandoned when you live to 60?
According to Indian Buddhist scriptures, a long time ago, there was a country that abandoned the old as the old, where the old people would be abandoned or buried alive when they reached a certain age. According to the later investigation, it was found that similar places abandoned the elderly in Sichuan, Anhui, Hubei, Shaanxi and other places. Basically, they dug a narrow hole in the steep cliff wall and left the old man there until he died.
This kind of hole is so narrow that an adult doesn't even have room to stretch freely in it, let alone try to survive, so once the old man is abandoned in it, he will die. This kind of cave is called abandoning the old tomb or dying kiln.
Another way is to send the old man to the earthen pot grave. The so-called clay pot grave is to dig a hole in the ground, build some bricks and stones around the hole, and the old man will stay in this hole. Then the children will come to deliver some food every day, and each time they deliver it, they will build a brick until the pit is completely sealed.
The reason why there is such a custom of abandoning the old is because the ancient productivity level is low, and the old people are old and have lost their labor force, so they have to eat and drink for nothing and rely on others to support them. In the eyes of the ancients, it was a waste of living resources, so it would be buried alive or discarded when it was old.
At present, this custom is incredible, which violates ethics and morality, and is quite different from the virtue of putting filial piety first in China traditional culture, but perhaps it is also the last resort of people in that era.
