What are the forms of English poetry
The couplet that ends each poem (or chapter) seems to be a "summary" of the poem in meaning, and it is also a self-contained unit in meter. The couplet is the simplest stanza, consisting only of two lines with the same or similar end rhymes, and does not usually stand alone. Of the famous English poets, probably only Alexander Pope (1688-1744) in the 18th century wrote such a "couplet" of only two lines, which is so concise that it is often quoted as a "cautionary tale".
The Italian sonnet is divided into two stanzas, eight and then six. The first eight lines rhyme with abba, abba, and the last six lines have two variations, cdecde,
or cdccdc. The ninth line does not only change the rhyme scheme, but often has a different title or feel.
