Was Picasso a Cubist? What are the characteristics of this school of painting?
The main features of Cubism:
Inspired by Cézanne's idea of "dealing with nature by means of cylinders, spheres and cones", the Cubists tried to create structural beauty in their paintings. They worked hard to reduce the descriptive and expressive components of their works, striving to organize a geometric tendency of the picture structure. Although their works still maintained a certain degree of figurativeness, fundamentally, their goal was very different from objective reproduction. They developed a so-called "simultaneous vision" painting language from Cézanne, combining different views of objects from multiple angles on the same image in the painting. For example, in Picasso's Maiden of Avignon, the front face is painted with the nose in the side, while the side face is painted with the eyes in the front. Generally speaking, The Maid of the Avignon was the first work of Cubism, and the Cubist movement is usually divided into two phases. One stage is the so-called Analytical Cubism before 1912. Painters inherited Cézanne's tradition of rational analysis of the structure of paintings, and tried to form a pictorial spatial and physical structure through the decomposition and reconstruction of space and objects. After 1912, the Cubist movement entered the second stage, usually called Composite Cubism. At this time color played a powerful role in the paintings, but the forms were still fragmented, only larger and more decorative. The painters created a new artistic technique and language of collage graphics with physical objects, which further strengthened the texture of the picture and raised the question of what is reality and what is illusion in nature and painting. Although Cubism is a style of painting, it also had a profound impact on sculpture and architecture in the 20th century.
