The 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar is the Lantern Festival that people look forward to year after year. Whenever this festival comes, large red lanterns are hung in front of every house, adding a festive atmosphere to this traditional festival. A large red lanterns like a glowing red sun, more like a beautiful ball of color, each lantern to the front of the door stained a piece of red. And this big red lantern, there is a folk story passed down from generation to generation.

It is said that after Zhu Yuanzhang became the emperor of the Ming Dynasty, he was very headstrong and advocated force, and when it was cloudy and rainy, the arrow wound on his arm was vaguely painful. So, he called his beloved general Hu Hai and instructed him, "My arm was shot by the guards when I attacked Wuxi. Now, I order you to take 500 soldiers to Wuxi and kill it for three days and three nights, in order to avenge this arrow of mine." Killing the whole city's population just for the wound of this arrow! The civil and military ministers were all worried about the emperor's violence.

The news reached the minister Zhang Zhizai, who rushed to see Hu Hai and said, "My friends and relatives are in Wuxi, what can they do if you lead your troops all the way to kill them?" Hu Hai laughed: "Lord Zhang, looking at your friendship with me, I will not hurt them." "No no no, you don't know where they live and you don't know them!" Hu Hai looked down and pondered for a while, and said, "Let's do it this way, Mr. Zhang, inform your friends and relatives in Wuxi, and tell them to hang a big red lantern in front of their door, and then I will recognize the lanterns but not the people!" Zhang Zhizai heard, think this idea is good, immediately wrote a letter sent to Wuxi.

So the people of Wuxi were prepared. When Hu Hai arrived in Wuxi with his troops, he only saw that the streets and alleys were empty, and large red lanterns were hung in front of every house, so it was impossible to tell which house and which house were the relatives and friends of Zhang Daoren. Hu Hai took one look and understood. So he took his men and horses around the city of Wuxi for three days, and without touching a single person, he went back to deliver.

So the people of Wuxi were very thankful to Zhang Zhizai, and every time this time of the year, every household hung lanterns in front of their doors. Later, the custom of hanging lanterns spread to the north and south of the Yangtze River.

The hanging of lanterns on the Lantern Festival is not only to add a festive atmosphere to the Lantern Festival, but also to show people's gratitude to Zhang Zhizai and praise his resourcefulness. Sometimes, a smart person can save the people of the whole city; sometimes, a smart person is more useful than a man with a lot of money. Therefore, we should study hard to make ourselves a smart plus wise person.
