The Origin and Customs of Labor Day in China

Originated from the victory of proletarian working people's struggle for rights and interests, this custom is a holiday.

On May 1, 1886, a large-scale workers' strike took place in Chicago, USA, aiming at fighting for the legitimate rights and interests of the working class. The strike lasted for eight hours and ended in the victory of proletarian workers. 1889, socialists gathered in Paris, and Engels proposed that May 1 day, that is, the strike day in the United States, be designated as International Labor Day to celebrate workers' winning legitimate rights and interests. After the founding of New China, International Labor Day was designated as a legal holiday.

As Labor Day is a worldwide international festival, the customs of each country are different. The main custom of Labor Day in China is to have a legal holiday, on which people will travel, visit relatives and friends, and so on. In addition, various schools will organize students to draw handwritten newspapers, write articles, perform cultural performances and so on, and some TV stations will hold some special parties to celebrate May 1 International Labor Day and commemorate the legitimate rights and interests of proletarian workers.
