The historical development of Taoism can be roughly divided into five periods: at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Zhang Daoling founded "Wudou Mi Dao" and Zhang Jiao founded "Taiping Dao" as the founding period of Taoism; Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties is a period when Taoism spread from the folk to the upper class of society and reformed itself. From Sui and Tang Dynasties to Northern Song Dynasty, Taoism flourished and developed. From the Southern Song Dynasty to the middle of Ming Dynasty, Neo-Taoism rose and developed continuously. From the middle of Ming Dynasty to modern times, Taoism gradually declined. In the long historical development process, Taoism, based on the basic belief of "Taoism becomes immortal", gradually perfected the theological theory of expressing belief, established ritual vessels and various Taoist arts to express belief, and created some Taoist organizations that brought together people with the same belief. This chapter not only discusses the belief, thought and social roots of Taoism, but also traces the tortuous road that Taoism has taken in the historical development process of nearly two thousand years along the historical track.

The first section is the source of Taoism: living water.

It is generally believed that Wudoumi Daoism and Taiping Daoism, which appeared at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, were early Taoist groups, and their appearance marked the establishment of Taoism. However, if we explore the emergence and spread of the earliest Taoist work "Taiping Jing", we can see that Taoism is not based on itself like some world religions.
