Chunk structure:

The PNG image format file (or data stream) consists of an 8-byte PNG file signature field and three or more chunks organized in a specific structure.

PNG defines two types of chunks, one called critical chunks, which are required, and the other called ancillary chunks, which are optional. Critical chunks define four standard chunks that must be included in every PNG file, and must be supported by PNG reader and writer software.
