China opera is mainly composed of folk songs and dances, rap and burlesque. The five major operas in China are: Peking Opera, Henan Opera, Yue Opera, Huangmei Opera and Pingju Opera.
Peking Opera: It originated from a group of students who came to Beijing, and was formed in Beijing around 1840, which prevailed in the 1930s and 40s.
Henan Opera: Henan Opera was born in Kaifeng in the Song Dynasty.
Yue Opera: It originated in Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province in the late Qing Dynasty and developed from local folk songs.
Huangmei Opera: Originated in Qianlong period of Qing Dynasty, it was popular in Anqing and other places in Anhui Province.
Pingju: It was formed in Luanxian County, Tangshan in the late Qing Dynasty.
