The Harmfulness of Eucalyptus
1. Eucalyptus is a "water pump"
Eucalyptus is a fast-growing and productive forest, which has a great demand for soil water, and the introduction of eucalyptus in a large area will lead to a decline in the water table, and its ability to keep water is very poor, and in the long run, the surface of the land is stagnant and the phenomenon of sanding has also appeared. The drought in the southwest region this time has a lot to do with the local planting of eucalyptus trees regardless of the situation. Some scholars anticipated this problem a few years ago, but local governments planted eucalyptus trees in large quantities for short-term gains, leading to surface water loss, land sloughing, and no grass growing.
2. Eucalyptus is a "fertilizer pump"
Eucalyptus has a great demand for soil fertilizers and nutrients, and where eucalyptus is planted, the fertility of the land declines or even dries up, and the original vegetation is seriously damaged because it does not get enough fertilizers and nutrients, triggering land degradation, deterioration of soil and water conservation, and infertility of the land. The land will become infertile, so that other plants cannot survive at all. The proportion of soil intensity erosion increases year by year, and landslides and floods increase.
3. Eucalyptus is an "overbearing tree"
The eucalyptus tree has a great inhibiting effect on local native, native and indigenous species. When it grows, other species can't grow, and will slowly retreat, eventually causing eucalyptus forests to be bare on the surface, with no grass or shrubs on the ground cover (e.g., what is commonly known as the "mud tree" in the hometown, "milk root", "chicken poop vine", "honeysuckle", etc.), and no small trees or various herbs and medicines. Other species cannot survive with it. Decay and degradation of native species, plant species are extremely single, unable to provide food or suitable habitat for most animals, forest animals are very rare or even extinct, the level of biodiversity is extremely low, the biological food chain is broken, the ecology is very fragile, there is a lack of natural enemies to control pests, it is easy to be infected with pests, resulting in large-scale damage, the felling of natural forests to plant large areas of trees of a single type, similar age and very dense plantation forests, will lead to the "natural forests", and will lead to the "natural forests". Cutting down natural forests to plant large artificial forests with a single species of trees of similar age and very dense will lead to "green deserts"; dryness and easy to form fires; and also lead to microclimatic changes and other serious ecological crises. The ecology will be devastated and difficult to recover from. And not necessarily in two or three years.
4. The chemical products applied to eucalyptus are highly toxic and have a long toxic effect, and eucalyptus gas has a stimulating and poisonous effect
It is said that certain highly toxic and long toxic chemical products will be applied to eucalyptus planting, which will be difficult to clean up once they are applied to the land, polluting the water quality greatly, and causing incalculable harm to humans and animals after drinking. In addition, eucalyptus emits an odor that is irritating and toxic to the human body and will threaten the health of local people.
Own Characteristics:
Tall evergreen tree (a few species are small trees), can grow to 100-110 meters, up to 152 meters, is the world's tallest tree. Light-loving, moisture-loving, drought-resistant, heat-resistant, cold-fearing, very sensitive to low temperatures. Some species originated in the tropics, intolerant of low temperatures below 0 degrees; some species were born in warm climates, can withstand -10 degrees low temperature. Most require an average annual temperature of 15 ℃ or more, the coldest month is not less than 7 ~ 8 ℃.
The common name for Eucalyptus spp. in the myrtle family. Evergreen trees, thick and persistent bark, or smooth and annual shedding. Leaves two types, juvenile leaves sessile and opposite, mature leaves sickle-shaped or oblong. There is a volatile aromatic oil. Flowers bisexual, calyx tube campanulate and united with the ovary; petals and calyx lobes united into a capsule; stamens numerous, anthers cordate or reniform, rectilinear or foramen open; disk present; ovary inferior, 2-7-loculed, ovules numerous. Capsule enclosed in pot-shaped calyx tube or protruding outside calyx tube; disk forming a fruiting margin at fruiting. Seeds numerous, only a few fertile. Eucalyptus is very diverse, with 522 species and 150 varieties.
Born in sunny plains, slopes and roadsides. Leaves can be harvested throughout the year. It is cultivated in the south and southwest of China. Eucalyptus has a small canopy and high light transmission, which is favorable to the growth of grass under the bushes. Small crown, transpiration is also small, is a water-saving tree species. Eucalyptus can grow in a variety of soils, and most species are adapted to both acidic and alkaline soils, while the most suitable soil is fertile alluvial soil. Generally can grow in the area of annual precipitation of 500 millimeters, annual precipitation of more than 1,000 millimeters of growth is better. It is suitable for acidic red soil, yellow soil and deep alluvial soil, but grows well in deep, loose and well-drained soil. The main root is deep and resistant to wind. Most of the root neck has wood tumors, with the role of nutrient storage and sprouting renewal. Generally 3 to 4 years after afforestation can be flowering and fruiting.
