"Cultural mashups" in "Begonia"

There is a fish in the northern underworld, and its name is Kun. The size of the Kun is so large that I don't know how many thousands of miles it is.

In my eyes, I can see at least the following elements in "Big Fish and Begonia": Hakka culture (Tulou, costumes), fish (sea fish), and myths and legends; however, these things are not historically connected, so I would position him as a "cultural mash-up". I'm sure I'll get a lot of flak for writing this, so let's take a look at it first.

First, the Hakka

1, Tulou

2, geography

The village of Tsubaki in "Big Fish Begonia" is built on a hill, surrounded by mountains.

Most of the Hakka people live in mountainous areas, with houses built on mountains and surrounded by hills.

Look at the picture, you will know the relationship between Big Fish Begonia and Hakka Tulou, in addition to the characters' costumes and dances in it, there is also the shadow of Hakka culture in the explicit detail. When I first saw this side of the story, I would have thought it was a Hakka legend, but I only guessed the beginning, not the end. Because later in this story appeared in the legend, the fish of this carrier are not Hakka culture has something, so there is my statement - "cultural mix and match style".

Second, the fish and the legend

There are two kinds of fish in this side, one is the third category of people who are independent of the human and the god, and they have to go to the earth to practice for 7 days in their adulthood, and they are in the form of a fish in the ocean of the earth, and they observe everything on the earth which is under their control. They open the gates of heaven through their grandmother Chu and pass through a vortex passage that leads to the earthly ocean. The second is the soul of a good person, who becomes a fish after death, and is watched over by a big fish (Yeong-ma), who decides where they go from here.

There are at least two places here that are things that don't mesh with the previously mentioned Hakka culture; the Hakka people live by the mountains, there would be no ocean, and then even less dolphins.

This first said a legend about the dolphin:

In the long, long ago, the son of the gods violated the taboo of the world of the gods, and the mortal world of the girl fell in love, do not see in the world of the gods and the world of the mortal world, the two traveled to the ends of the earth, but could not find a place to stay, only the Queen of the elves who lived in the deepest part of the forest sympathized with their situation, gave the lovers a pair of spiritual copper ring. The rings protect them across the sea, but the jealous god discovers the secret of the rings, takes them away and throws them into the sea. Without the protection of the rings, the lovers were separated by the waves. Even so, they searched for each other until the last moment. As dawn approached and the two were about to turn into bubbles, this love touched the kind-hearted dolphins, who carried the ring in their arms as the morning sun was about to appear. The dolphin jumped out of the sea with the bronze ring, so that the two lovers could have the blessing of the Queen of the Elves to be together again. When the first light of dawn shines on the white sandy beach, the whole beach turns into a happy pink color, and the dolphin also leaps into the sky and becomes the dolphin that guards love. From then on, every year in early fall, when the dolphins appear in the morning sky, the beach shines with pink light, and if you listen quietly, you can hear the dolphins singing. If you look into the distance, you can see the dolphins are carrying the copper ring, so the dolphins have become the guardian of love.

Extended from this, dolphin becomes synonymous with perseverance, guardianship, and kindness.

Dig deeper, generalized dolphin is a "fish", we live on the earth, the earliest time is a sea, the world's earliest creatures are "fish", the traditional Chinese fish pattern is the longest history of development in Chinese history, the most widely used, and carries a Chinese tradition of fish patterns. Chinese traditional fish pattern is the longest history of development in China, the most widely used, and carries some auspicious symbols of the traditional pattern, such as fish in the year, and so on, and some ethnic groups will be the fish as their own national ancestor and good luck. In the water tribe, the fish is the most important revered things, fish in the water tribe in all aspects of social life have a significant impact, fish totem is the water tribe blood relatives, is the ancestor, is the god of protection, is the descendants of the children and grandchildren and so on, the water tribe of people believe that their life is from the beginning of the fish, and after death will also become a fish. This seems to give "Big Fish Begonia" - "The soul of a good person will turn into a fish after death, and when the fish swims from this shore to the other shore, it means that the person's life has come to an end. From the beginning of this life as a fish, to the end of this life as a fish." A cultural rationale is provided. When I was talking to a friend about this topic, he asked me, "Well, why don't you just use a fish instead of a dolphin? I actually came out with my oft-stated reason, and I couldn't really think of any more. "Because dolphins are cute! The image is beautiful! Good symbolism!" Imagine what would happen if it had been a grass carp, carp, or crucian carp? Hahaha, the image is too beautiful for me to look at!

Speaking of this side, it probably expresses the idea I want to express: the conflict between Hakka culture and aquatic culture.

The Hakka (English: Hakka, Hakka vernacular characters: Hak-k? or Khak-k?, Hakka pinyin: Hag5-ga1 or Kag5-ga1) is the main component of the local ethnic groups in Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian, Guangxi, and Taiwan in southern China, and is a Han Chinese folk group with a wide distribution and far-reaching influence in the world. The Shui, who call themselves rensui or sui people, mainly live in the Sandu Shui Autonomous County, Dushan County, Libo County, Duyun City, Rongjiang County, Leishan County, Congjiang County, Danzhai County, Fuquan City, etc. in the southern and southeastern regions of Guizhou Province, Rong'an County, Nandan, Yishan, Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County, Hechi City, Du'an Yao Autonomous County, Liyang City, and Guguan County in the Zhuang Autonomous Region of Guangxi, Fuyuan County in Qujing City, Yunnan Province, Shui Township, Jiyan County in Jiangxi Province, and Guguan County in Jiangxi Province. In Yunnan Province, there are a small number of Shui people living in Fuyuan County, Qujing City, Jiangxi Province, and in Ji'an, Jiangxi Province. (Quoted from Baidu Encyclopedia) From the geographical point of view, it seems that these two groups have nothing to do with each other. The two cultures were put together, and there was no thought that there would be a slight disharmony.

But this is actually a kind of cultural innovation, but I personally still insist that since the play is based on culture, it is best to look into its cultural roots, otherwise it will not be able to withstand scrutiny, and there will be a suspicion that it is top-heavy and light-rooted. But from another perspective, it doesn't really matter, because there's not a lot of people who are going to dig deeper.

So, it's 12 o'clock again, dinner!
