What is the essence of anti-Confucianism and anti-tradition

Chen Duxiu's fierce criticism of Confucius and Confucianism does not mean obliterating the historical value of Confucius and Confucianism, nor is it "completely anti-traditional" as some researchers say, nor does it lead to "the rupture of China culture". In correspondence with Wu Yu, Chang Naide, Yu Songhua and others, Chen Duxiu elaborated in detail the reasons and intentions of opposing Confucius and criticizing Confucianism.

Chen Duxiu's anti-Confucius criticism of Confucianism is mainly aimed at the negative role played by the feudal morality of the Three Cardinal Principles and the Five Permanent Principles in modern society, and affirms the contribution and role of Confucius and Confucianism in the history of China. These views of Chen Duxiu represent the general attitude of the participants in the New Culture Movement towards Confucius and Confucianism. It is precisely because Chen Duxiu and others did not completely deny Confucius and Confucianism, especially the historical position and value of Confucius at that time, that they did not agree with those extreme opinions in the new culture camp.
